My tee time at the Kau Sai Chau Golf Course was at 13:13 on Friday the 13th. What could possibly go wrong? More on that a bit later. Leighton secured an invite for the annual golf trip with the Hong Kong Scottish Rugby Football Club. In Hong Kong getting to the golf course is more complex than in the Okanagan. We left shortly after 8 am and took a taxi to the MTR (Metro). After a ride on the MTR we hopped in another taxi followed by a ferry ride and arrived at our destination after a final short bus ride. Kau Sai Chau is the only public course in Hong Kong and is located on a beautiful island east of Hong Kong. This is very nice golf facility but check in was about as tricky as getting into another country. I had to show my passport at check in and needed to show my drivers license to drive the cart.
I was paired with Ian Stewart, a handicap 6 golfer, and the game was Texas scramble. I had never played this format but thoroughly enjoyed it. My game was absolutely dreadful. I had a very hard time producing my 6 drives as I sent droves of balls into the lush rain forrest. I did not hit a single good drive all day and I have to thank my very patient partner in this game. We had a great time and some good laughs along the way.
On the way home in the bus I was about to learn a bit of Scottish Rugby culture. It was terrific fun. Let's just say a bit of drinking was involved and a game of fines was initiated rather quickly after departure. I had never seen or heard about this before but it was hugely entertaining and just about everyone in the bus were eventually fined (and forced to drink x amount of Whisky). Some of course were fined several times. And boy can these guys sing! The other cars on the highway must have heard us. I loved the team songs and especially one song/chant stood out. Check the recording below. Thanks Leighton for getting me on board for this wonderful day.
