I got to try the Leica M EV1 at our Camera, Coffee, and Things meetup on Friday. The EV1 is based on Leica’s M series cameras but without the rangefinder focusing system.

Instead, it features an electronic viewfinder. As a Leica SL2-S user who mainly uses manual-focus lenses, the EV1 sounds like a dream come true at first glance, at a much lower weight.

However, at a steep USD $9,290.00 or CAD $ 12,975.00 price point, I would be facing a big upgrade cost.

I love the M EV1's shutter sound and the camera's overall feel, but it has an odd design clash between an M and Q camera. The viewfinder looks exactly like a Q camera, and the material wrapping the camera does, too. I wish they had kept it more like an M camera.

The EV1 has an extremely long start-up time, which Leica hopefully will address in a firmware update.

I had a very short time with the EV1, and despite the niggles mentioned above, I am sure it would be an okay camera, once you get to know it better and work out settings to your liking.
