Living near English Bay, we see the same scene day after day: people coming down to the water to photograph the sunset, and we do the same. But at times I wonder if the phones are taking over, fighting for our attention.

I am sure the guy in the photo above finally sat down on the bench to take in the view, but for others, the phones and getting the shot take over from the experience.

A couple of days ago, we saw two families so obsessed with their phones that they didn’t spend time with their kids, instead lining them up for photos at the water’s edge. Why?

One case was downright frightening. A young boy just wanted to play, but a grandmother finally hit him twice so that he would line up for photos with her. Then with a wide smile she had her photo taken on the beach and completely ignored the young boy. I almost got up to ask them what in the world was going on, but resisted. Tragic.
