One Day, One Camera and One Lens

While most of the province of British Columbia is hit by forest fires and smoke, so far we have been fortunate here in Vancouver, with only a few days of smoke in the air. I felt guilty for enjoying a beautiful August summer day, taking the camera out for street photography.

We did have a goal in mind for our day: a Greg Girard photography exhibition in North Vancouver. We walked, took the SkyTrain and SeaBus to North Vancouver, but also walked the streets of downtown.

The Greg Girard exhibition was inspiring, and I felt very motivated to go out and produce meaningful images afterward.

Along Granville Street, I came upon a scene with posters in the background and pedestrians walking by. A billboard on the sidewalk provided a reflection, and I kept snapping away. It reminded me of a page out of my Henri Cartier-Bresson book where he talks about the decisive moment. I have a hard time picking a favorite.

For this splendid summer day, I brought one camera and one lens, a favorite combination of mine lately: the Leica SL2-S and Voigtländer Nokton 50mm f/1.2 (M-Mount).

Bringing just one camera and one lens for a photo walk is something I cannot recommend enough. As photographers, we often feel we are missing out if we don’t bring a variety of lenses, just in case we need them.

In the end, bringing too much gear ends up weighing us down, not only physically but also mentally. Too many choices can be paralyzing, and you often waste time considering options and constantly switching lenses.
