A Desert-Like Experience Along the West Coast of Denmark Hiking the Sand Dunes at Rudbjerg Knude Lighthouse

Along the west coast of Denmark, in Rudbjerg, you will find a gem hidden in the desert-like dunes. The lighthouse at Lønstrup Klint was built in 1899 and in 2019 it was moved further inland by 70 meters as it was feared the lighthouse otherwise would have disappeared into the North Sea due to erosion.

It is a surreal experience as you approach the lighthouse and see it from a distance for the first time as it is the only thing you see amidst the dunes.

That is until you get closer, and a panoramic view of the North Sea presents itself. Before that happens you do have to climb a sizable hill with the wind and sand blowing in your face.

It was windy the day I climbed the hill and it didn’t take long before I felt sand between my teeth. It was fully worth the effort and I was rewarded with almost clear blue skies and only a few clouds on the horizon.

Despite the blue skies, I still believe the coastal scenery begged to be captured in black and white, emphasizing the lines in the landscape.

Photographically speaking this location was treat and one that I had heard of many times before but never did visit although I grew up only a couple of hours drive further south along the coast.

The 23-meter high (75 ft.) lighthouse looks taller than it is. Surely it is because you cannot scale it to anything if you look around except for the breathtaking scenery.

The stairs leading you to the top of the lighthouse were renovated in 2016 and if you have come this far you do not want to miss the view from the top. As far as you can see, you can feast your eyes on the Danish west coast and the North Sea.

On my way back I stopped at the edge of the bluffs but had to turn around almost instantly due to the strong winds and sand blowing. Quite a spectacle though. Walking back to the parking lot I came upon a flock of sheep and it felt like I was in Scotland for a moment.

The walk from the parking lot to the lighthouse is about 20 minutes. You can cut that in about half if you jump on the tractor-pulled cart that will transport you a bit closer to the foot of the dunes.

Rudbjerg Knude Lighthouse and the surrounding area with its wind-swept dunes is perhaps one of the more underrated attractions I have visited in a long time.

This stop along the Danish west coast is surely worth it. You will get some exercise, plenty of fresh air, an adventure climbing the dunes, and be rewarded with spectacular views of the seascape and coast line.
