Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8 R LM WR Review

The Fujfilm X-T50, silver, and Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR

The Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8, a Super Compact and Versatile Standard Zoom Choice

My headline for this paragraph would usually set off the alarm bells for me. Whenever lens manufacturers add too much praise, I am wary that I am facing an overpromise-and-underdelivery scenario.

Fujifilm didn’t come up with the headline; I did. And I may already be spoiling my conclusion.

Fujifilm Canada recently sent me the X-T50 for a review, and I requested the XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR to accompany it, as I view it as an obvious choice for travel. Let’s see if it’s any good.

Introduction

The Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8 R LM WR was introduced a couple of years ago and was available from June 2024.

At the time, it was mentioned as a successor to the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS, and the XF 18-55mm has since been discontinued despite being one of the best standard zoom kit lenses ever.

In comparison, the XF 16-50mm offers a slightly wider view at the wide-angle end and shaves a notch off at the telephoto end. It adds WR weather sealing but lacks optical image stabilization. The f-stop on the long end, f/4.8, is also slightly slower than the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4.

When this review was posted, the Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8 R LM WR retailed for $849.00.

Build Quality, Specs, and Handling

Last summer, I reviewed the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II ($1,399.00), and while I liked this lens and it was manageable at 14.5 oz (410 g), I was using it on the slightly larger X-Pro2.

For a super-compact, non-intrusive option, the XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4 R LM WR has been on my mind, and I am glad I finally got a chance to try it. This lens is better suited to smaller cameras such as the Fujifilm X-E5 or X-T50.

The XF 16-50mm is significantly smaller and weighs a mere 0.5 lb (240 g). The zoom action is silky smooth, with minimal friction. I really like this.

As the lens has a variable aperture (f/2.8-4.8 depending on your zoom setting), you unfortunately cannot read the aperture on the aperture ring and will have to rely on the EVF or the rear LCD.

The XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 sports Fujifilm’s linear autofocus motor (LM), which is fast and silent. It features three aspherical elements and three ED elements, and one of my favorite features is internal zoom, which means the lens won’t protrude as you zoom from 16 to 50mm.

The filter size is 58mm, and it has 9 rounded 9 diaphragm blades.

Overall, the build quality is great and up to par with most XF lenses I’ve tried.

In Action

The XF 16-50mm f/2.8 R LM WR is a carefree lens option—one you bring out on a nice day or for travel when you are looking for a lightweight companion for your Fujifilm X-Series camera.

The full-frame equivalent focal length is 24-76mm, and I found it very versatile while out cycling around town.

I captured the majority of the sample images while cycling, and this is where a lens like this shines. With a camera such as the X-T50, you barely feel this camera-lens combination hanging from your neck or across your shoulder.

For travel, you could get by with just this one lens, but I would recommend pairing it with a faster prime. For my test, I also had the excellent XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR.

These two lenses paired would make an excellent combo. The XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 offers a variety of focal lengths and is best used in sufficient light. If you have a camera with image stabilization, it will be even more versatile.

Then, at dusk, in the evenings or after dark, and for indoor photography, action, or portraits, the XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR would excel and complement the XF 16-50mm very well.

The XF 33mm f/1.4 lets in an additional two stops of light and is also better at isolating your subject with a shallow depth of field.

Image Quality

Expectations for image quality from the XF 16-50mm were high, and I am happy to report that, for the most part, I was really happy with the sample images you can see in this review.

Colors are vibrant, and it is sharp like you would expect from a Fujifilm lens in this price category. I found that the lens impressed me the most on the wider end and gradually diminished slightly as you zoom towards 50mm.

My one criticism of lenses in this category is that images may all look somewhat similar due to the slower f-stop range, which makes it harder to isolate subjects or blur the foreground or background. This is why it would be so valuable to pair it with a faster prime lens at your favorite focal length.

Conclusion

If you go back to my headline in the first paragraph, the main stories with the Fujifilm XF 16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR are, in fact, very good portability, flexibility, and weight blended with acceptable image quality at this price level.

Sure, the slower f/4.8 aperture is limiting at 50mm, but that doesn’t mean it is unusable. You can grab plenty of photos that you otherwise wouldn’t have been able to capture, say if you were only carrying a 23mm prime lens.

I found the image quality excellent on the wide end and really enjoyed the lens's feel, weight, and the barely noticeable weight.
