Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II Review

The Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II

The Essential Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 Standard Zoom Lens Updated

I still rely on my trusted Fujifilm X-Pro2 for certain photo gigs, and for a recent job, I also rented the new Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II, which proved to be a lifesaver.

I was not fully aware of the scope of this photo gig, which ended up being predominantly outside, atop a skyscraper in downtown Vancouver, in pouring rain, while photographing various construction installations.

Without the zoom lens, this job would have been very challenging, and I ended up shooting the entire gig with the 16-55mm f/2.8 R WR II, despite having two cameras ready and several primes to choose from.

Unfortunately, I cannot share the client images, but the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II performed exceptionally well in inclement weather, thanks to its weather sealing, versatile focal length, and fast, constant maximum f-stop throughout the zoom range.

I rented the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R WR II again, and the sample images you will see in this review were captured over a gorgeous summer weekend in July.

Introduction

The XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II hit the market in late 2024. It is the second version of this lens, which prides itself on being smaller and optically better. It now features a de-clickable aperture ring, a feature that videographers will appreciate.

The original version, which is still being sold, is heavier and bulkier. The new version II weighs only 63% of the original.

At the time this review was posted, the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R WR II was priced at $1,199.00, which is $200.00 more than the original version.

Handling and Specs

As this was my second time with the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II, the lower weight was not a surprise, but I must point out what a relief it is, compared to the heavier original version.

At 14.5 oz (410 g), I cycled and walked with my X-Pro2, and only during the midday heat did it become slightly bothersome around my neck during a cycling trip. However, overall, the lens was a pleasure to use, featuring an excellent aperture ring and a smooth zoom ring.

I did not use the de-click feature for the aperture ring, but it's nice to know it’s there for any video work.

The new dimensions of the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 II are 3.1 x L: 3.7 (78.3 x 95 mm), and it accepts 72mm filters. It has 16 elements in 12 groups and 11 diaphragm blades.

In Action

I recently purchased the Panasonic Lumix S 24-60mm f/2.8 for my Leica SL2-S, and while this lens prides itself on being compact, the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II outperforms it in terms of size and zoom range.

I know I'm comparing a full-frame lens to an APS-C lens, but it's worth mentioning that APS-C has the advantage of being lighter and smaller in this context.

The autofocus speed is excellent, and it operates remarkably quietly. However, my X-Pro2 appears to struggle a bit with keeping up in the autofocus department. I noticed several out-of-focus shots that should have been a slam dunk. I am sure this will be better with any of the newer Fujifilm cameras.

Image Quality

The Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R WR II is probably the best zoom lens I have tested for the Fujifilm X-Series cameras. Colors are vibrant with fidelity, and the lens renders with a wonderful presence.

Ideally, I would have liked to have one of the newer X-Trans 5 sensor cameras on hand for this test, as sure it would have kept up with the 40-megapixel sensors just fine. Also, in hindsight, a couple of portraits would have been appropriate.

That said, I am happy with the sample images I was able to create in a few short days with Fujifilm's older X-Pro2, which remains my all-time favorite Fujifilm camera. I took a few portraits during my gig, and they turned out great, with pleasing bokeh.

If you would like to compare the new version II of the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 to the original version, I have a review of it here, along with sample images captured with the X-Pro3.

Conclusion

Without a doubt, the new XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II is worth the extra cost ($ 200) over the original version if you plan to purchase a new lens. The lower weight and less bulk are worth the increased price tag alone.

However, you may be able to find a good deal on the original version if you buy it second-hand. If you don’t mind the extra bulk and weight, I found it performed admirably, as you can read in my review.

It’s worth mentioning that neither the original nor the new version II lens has OIS (optical image stabilization). Many of the newer Fuji cameras feature IBIS (in-body image stabilization), making this less of an issue. However, for older cameras, such as my X-Pro2, it may remain a concern.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with the new updated XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R WR II. I currently do not need this lens to have a permanent spot in my kit, but would rent again in a heartbeat when the situation or a gig calls for it.

Pros

  • Less weight and bulk than the original

  • Fast constant f-stop

  • De-clickable aperture ring

Cons

  • A bit pricey
