Sony FE 50 f/1.4 GM Review

Sony A7 V and Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM
The Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM - My Favorite Sony Lens So Far
I had the opportunity to try the new Sony A7 V back in February, and earlier this month, Sony Canada lent me an A7R V (thanks, Stewart). I had each camera for a week, and both times I lucked out and had the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM.
My caption above is a bit of a giveaway as to what you may read in this review, but perhaps it isn’t a coincidence that I got along with this lens. For a while now, I have gravitated towards 50mm lenses and have owned quite a few over the years.
I have yet to try the Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM, and who knows—when I do, I may be able to use the same praising caption. But for now, let’s take a closer look at the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM and see what makes this version special, regardless.

Introduction
The Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM has been on the market for a little over three years. Back in 2023, Sony had the ZA version (Zeiss-branded) 50mm f/1.4, so it was a breath of fresh air to see a GM version.
As I am fairly new to the Sony realm, I have not tried other Sony versions, but I am familiar with several other 50mm lenses, including manual-focus Voigtländer lenses, and with autofocus options from Canon, Nikon, and Panasonic in this segment.
At the time this review was posted, the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM retailed for $1,348.00.

Handling and Build Quality
With a reasonably low weight of 18.2 oz (516 g) for an f/1.4 lens, and measuring 3.2 x L: 3.8" (80.6 x L: 96 mm), the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM is a formidable fit on the Sony A7 V and A7R V.
Sony is known for its smaller and lighter cameras, and, combined with the A7 V (1.5 lb / 695 g), I found this combo a pleasure to use, with a good balance between camera and lens.
The FE 50mm f/1.4 GM has 14 elements in 11 groups and accepts 67mm filters. It also has 11 rounded aperture blades, which should translate into nice-looking bokeh.
The grooves on the aperture ring could be a tad wider for better grip, but otherwise, I have nothing to complain about in terms of overall build quality.
I appreciate the rubber finish at the tip of the lens hood. This feels really good if you place your camera on a surface with the lens facing down, and it makes one-handed lens changes easier.

In Action
During my test period, I had four other Sony lenses: FE 24mm f/1.4 GM, FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II, FE 40mm f/2.5 G, and finally FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6, but if I could have only one lens, it would be the FE 50mm f/1.4 GM, and I could usually find an excuse to use it over the other lenses.
A 50mm lens makes for a great all-purpose lens, and if you combine that with manageable size and bulk, you are more likely to use it, and that’s what I found with the FE 50mm f/1.4 GM.
I found autofocus more than adequate for the types of images you see in this review, and eye-tracking worked fine for photos I captured with my family.

Image Quality
I cannot fault the image quality of the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM. It is certainly sharp, and in the f/1.4 to f/2 range, especially, I find the bokeh quite pleasing. For sharpness, I have no problem using it wide open at f/1.4.
In my Sony A7 V review, I mentioned that I had to get used to Sony colors, but that all sensors are now so good. It’s funny how quickly you get used to it, though. In one example, the photo below, I really like how the blue, yellow, and red stand out without any kind of preset.

It’s a Wrap
The Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM is quite perfect and doesn’t really ruffle feathers with swirly bokeh or heavy vignetting, and some photographers may find that a tad boring or predictable.
When comparing to other lenses, you may wish for different looks. For example, my Voigtländer 50mm f/1.2 may have more “character,” but perhaps less “perfect”. What you like is, of course, is highy subjective.
The FE 50mm f/1.4 GM also won’t separate your subject from the background like other Sony, Canon, or Nikon 50mm f/1.2 lenses do, but those lenses are bulkier, heavier, and more expensive.
So, which camp are you in? We all have to decide for ourselves.
I happen to think the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM hits an excellent middle ground. It’s still plenty fast, and at f/1.4, you can still shoot in low light or produce plenty of background blur.
Add to this decent portability and great balance on the camera, and I think you have a pretty solid option for a 50mm lens if you are in the Sony camp. Maybe I shouldn’t try the 1.2 version :)
