A Beautiful Match to the Fujifilm X-E5

Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary vs. Fujifilm XF 14mm f2.8 R

It is going to be hard to knock the Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R off the top spot for me in the wide-to-ultrawide spot. It’s a lens I have traveled all over the world with and used for countless pro gigs. And yet, at times, I wonder if it is getting long in the tooth. It is one of Fujifilm’s oldest XF lenses, released more than 13 years ago.

And then comes along the new Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary lens, with a slightly narrower field of view but two stops faster, a maximum aperture of f/1.4 vs. f/2.8 for the Fujifilm lens. Admittedly, I’ve often wished that my XF 14mm f/2.8 R was an f/1.4 or even f/2 lens.

In this review of the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary, I will discuss the pros and cons of the two lenses.

Introduction

The Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary was released in March of 2026, and I bought a copy as soon as it was available.

Sigma also has a 16mm f/1.4 DC, which is rather bulky and weighs almost twice as much as this new 15mm f/1.4 version. With the 15mm f/1.4, Sigma has also added an aperture ring, which is a huge plus in my book.

The Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary is available in Sony E, Canon RF, and Fujifilm X-Mount.

At the time this review was posted, the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary was priced at $579.00, and the Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 at $899.00 (on sale $100 off).

Handling and Specs

The Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary is and feels extremely light for an f/1.4 lens at a mere 7.9 oz (225 g).

The aperture ring is very well executed with a smooth clicking action. I sometimes feel I repeat myself when I write this, but it's one of those features that can make a big difference.

For instance, the aperture ring on the 15mm f/1.4 is not easily bumped out of position, and yet it has a wonderful feel when you want to change your aperture. You can also lock it into the A position.

There is no switch for manual and autofocus on the lens barrel. On my Fujifilm X-E5, there is a switch on the side of the camera, so it's not a problem. On some cameras, you’d have to switch in a camera menu.

The hood fits very well, with no wobble, and overall, I am impressed by the build quality (metal mount) and design aesthetics.

The Sigma 15mm f/1.4 and Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R weigh almost the same and are similar in size. The Sigma lens has weather sealing, whereas the Fujifilm has none. The XF 14mm has a clever focus clutch that lets you switch to manual focus. Admittedly, I rarely use it.

The 15mm f/1.4 has 9 rounded aperture blades, whereas the XF 14mm f/2.8 only has 7.

In Action

The stepping motor autofocus of the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 is plenty fast for my needs, especially for typical genres such as street photography, travel, and landscape scenes.

The 15mm f/1.4 is a phenomenally good fit on my Fujifilm X-E5 (link to my review). I currently use a Smallrig grip on the X-E5, but even without the grip, this lens is not too big to handle.

Pancake lenses, such as the XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR, have become increasingly popular, but I often find them a tad too small.

On the X-E or X-Pro cameras, I find lenses such as the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC, XF 14mm f/2.8 R, or XF 35mm f/1.4 R a perfect fit. They have enough space to give a good balance in your hand, and I find them easier to operate.

Image Quality

The Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary meets my expectations for image quality. It is sharp in the center, even wide open, and sharpness improves nicely as you stop it down.

Especially in scenes with foliage, I found the bokeh a bit busy at f/1.4, but it already improves and is quite pleasant by f/2. Foliage is often tricky, even for more expensive lenses.

For color vibrancy and 3D look, I still prefer the Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R, but I may be slightly swayed by extensive use over many years, where I was fortunate to travel to interesting locations.

Conclusion

Compared to the Fujifilm XF 14mm f/2.8 R, the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 costs only 58% of the Fuji lens (at regular retail price). It’s important to keep this in mind when standing at the counter in your local photography store or about to hit the buy button for an online purchase.

Keep in mind also the Sigma lens's faster f-stop. This will come in handy in low-light scenarios or when you like to create images with more background blur or greater isolation of your topic.

I haven’t touched on the angle of view of the two lenses. For some, the 15mm (22.5mm field of view in full-frame terms) may come off as a bit odd.

The XF 14mm yields a more classic 21mm full-frame view, which I tend to lean towards. However, there is no “wrong” focal length. It really comes down to what appeals to you, and the style of images you like to create, but remember, even 1mm makes a difference on the wide end.

The Sigma 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary is a compelling choice and offers accurate and good value for the money. It’s a nice addition, given its compact design, lightweight construction, and fast aperture. For documentary photographers operating in various lighting conditions, this lens would be a solid choice.

Pros

  • Light weight

  • Fast f-stop

  • Nice build quality and wonderful aperture ring

Cons

  • Bokeh a bit stressed at f/1.4
