Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIs Adapted to Fujifilm X-Mount and the X-Pro3
Last week I posted my Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIs review where I used it on Nikon F-Mount film cameras. In the review, you will see sample images from black and white negative film and I take a look at the specs, handling, and built quality of the lens.
Although the Voigtländer Ultron 40mm is a native Nikon F-Mount lens you can use it on modern mirrorless digital cameras of various brands when using the proper adapter.

Instead, I will share my take, on the pros, and cons of using the Ultron 40mm f/2 on a Fujifilm X-Mount camera, in my case the Fujifilm X-Pro3.
Adapting Lenses to Fujifilm X-Mount
I use a K&F Concept NIK to FX adapter that I found on Amazon for around $30.00 and it has come in handy many times. I primarily use it for copying negatives with a Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D macro lens.
My longest Fujifilm lens currently is the XF 35mm f/1.4 R, and hence I have also used my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S adapted to my Fujifilm X-Pro3. You can read more about this here:
While it is wonderful that you are able to adapt older lenses, and in the case of the Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIs, a new lens, it is not all sunshine and roses as the adapter will add bulk and weight to your setup.
You also lose information normally going to your camera when using modern autofocus lenses, such as EXIF information, information in the viewfinder of the f-stop used, and distance to your subject.
The EXIF and shooting information is very nice to have but you could argue that this has no impact on the end result whatsoever. You do, however, have to get past the limitation that the Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIs is a manual focus lens but some photographers actually prefer this.
With the Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIs you get an extremely smooth focusing ring which makes this process quite enjoyable and I would have to say the Ultron 40mm f/2 has been the best lens to adapt to my Fujifilm camera to date.
Perhaps because it is a modern and optically more correct lens it is easier to focus using the EVF. The aperture ring is moved out on the barrel due to the adapter and it is quite easy to adjust in this position.
How To Focus With the Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIs on a Fujifilm X Camera
On Fujifilm X Series cameras you have several modes aiding you in getting accurate focus. You can choose a split B/W, split with a color, prism, and a variety of focus peaking modes with or without color.
You may want to try out the different options in order to find one that suits your eye and style. I have found the STD MF assist works best for me using the EVF (electronic viewfinder).
Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIs Image Quality
The Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIs may very well be the best when it comes to the image quality of any lens I have adapted to Fujifilm cameras. It does not surpass the best native Fujifilm native lenses but I am finding that comes close if not equivalent to the Fujicrons, Fujifilm’s f/2 lenses in this focal length range.
The colors are vibrant and the images are sharp, even when shot wide open at f/2, and to boot the overall look of the photos has a pleasing character.

Final Thoughts
With the Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIs you get an excellent 40mm lens for your Nikon film camera or full-frame digital camera or a 60mm full-frame equivalent on cameras such as the Fujifilm X Series.
I have not tried it for video but with its smooth focusing, it is bound to work well for this application also.
It is not my primary intent to use the Voigtländer Ultron 40mm on my X-Pro3 but it is good to know that it works in a pinch. You could perhaps even argue that it is a viable standard lens option with the 1.5x crop factor of APS-C cameras as long as you are okay with a manual focusing lens.
