BC and Alberta Road Trip - Chapter 6 - Johnston Canyon Hiking and Biking

Riding the Bow Valley Parkway on e-bikes between Johnston Canyon and Banff

This is the Sixth Chapter from our BC and Alberta Road Trip in the fall of 2025. In late September, early October we set out on a 2,250 Km (1,400 Miles) road trip with a main objective to experience the fall colors in BCs Coastal Mountains, interior, and the Alberta Rockies.

In an unconvential way for us, we will index this post by our mileage markers and share with you anything that comes to mind, from the mundane to the extraordinary.

Our trip was 2250 km (1400 miles) long, to and from Vancouver, via Whistler, Clinton, Valemount, Mt. Robson, Jasper, Banff, and Radium Hot Srpings

Bow Valley E-Bike Trip, and Johnston Canyon Hike

1215 Km

We splurged and took a good chunk out of our Airmiles to book a couple of nights at Johnston Canyon Lodge and Bungalows.

Johnston Canyon Lodge and Bungalows has been family-run and operated since 1926 and offers 42 cabins/bungalows that are very cozy and fit the woodland setting perfectly, with its location right by the Johnston Canyon trailhead.

We were upgraded on arrival, which was pretty cool. The cabin we stayed in was all-through rustic, with a clawfoot bathtub and a natural fireplace. However, it did not have a kitchen, but the front desk provided a kettle and microwave, which was very helpful.

On our first day, we rented e-bikes and rode the out-of-this-world beautiful Bow Valley Parkway from Johnston Canyon to Banff and back—about a 55 km round trip (34 miles). It was an amazing trip with mountain scenery along the way.

On day two, we hiked Johnston Canyon, and the view at the top was equally rewarding. We went beyond the Upper Falls to the Ink Pots. This was a 12 Km hike (7.5 miles) with an elevation gain of more than 550 meters (1,800 ft.).

1330 Km

On our way back to Vancouver, we stopped for one night at Radium Hot Springs and for a few days in Vernon, where we visited friends.

2243 Km

This wraps up our 2025 BC and Alberta Fall Road Trip.

Total distance traveled—2,250 Km, or about 1,400 miles.
