Sample Images with the Fujifilm X-Pro1 and X-Pro2

The feature photo above of the XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR was captured when I first tried the lens more than four years ago. As is typical, Fujifilm Canada lent me the lens for my initial review. I then purchased the lens but sold it shortly after posting my final review to move on to the next lens.

This may sound exciting, since you get to try many different pieces of gear, but certain lenses or cameras tend to stick in my mind, and I often feel like I don’t give them the attention they deserve over time.

After a stint reviewing Sony gear, I pulled out my Fujifilm X-Pro cameras and spotted a mint XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR, which I felt would elevate the image quality of my aging X-Pro cameras.

I currently have two other XF Fujinon lenses, the XF 35mm f/1.4 R and XF 14mm f/2.8 R. Both are considered old in X-Series history, and while I have captured some of my all-time favorite images with these two lenses, the newer R LM WR lenses are a notch above in regard to the image quality they deliver.

I also had the XF 23mm f/1.4 R for a number of years, and the story is the same here. It was okay, and for its time it delivered wonderful photos, but the new R LM WR version is just better.

Last fall I tested the XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR with an X-E5. While it’s a great option if you are looking for portability, in my conclusion I wrote that it never blew me away, and it’s not the kind of lens I will reach for to create images oozing with character, or if I want the best possible quality.

The links in this paragraph will take you to the individual lens reviews.

Handling and Specs

The XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR has the same 58mm filter diameter as the XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR. However, it is slightly longer and heavier, measuring 2.6 x 3.1 inches (67 x 77.8 mm) and weighing 13.2 oz (375 g). While not by much, the lens hood is also slightly longer, giving it a subtly different look.

The XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR has 15 elements in 10 groups, 2 aspherical, 3 ED elements, 9 rounded diaphragm blades, and a minimum focusing distance of 7.5" (19 cm). Perhaps it is no coincidence that these specs are similar to those of the XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR.

The experience of working with the XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR is virtually the same as with the XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR. The two lenses share fast and silent autofocus, a linear motor (LM), weather resistance (WR), and aperture rings that feel very similar.

Portability

You should expect a bit more bulk and weight with the XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR (375 g) than with the XF 23mm f/2 R WR (180 g) and XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR (90 g).

I am currently borrowing a Leica Q Typ 116 from my friend Julian. I expected the two cameras to be similar, but the Leica Q isn't as wide as the X-Pro2, and with the lenses shown, it's about 200 g lighter.

That said, I don’t mind the extra bulk of the X-Pro2 and XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR combo. Especially if you have this setup as an alternative to a heavier full-frame setup.

Looking Ahead

It’s shaping up to be an exciting fall for Fujifilm fans, though this is pure guesswork based on rumors online. It sounds like we will see an X-T6 soon, and if I have my way, we will also get a new X-Pro4 before the end of the year, but I think I have written this in various reviews over the past three years, so we shall see.

Let it be no secret that I also acquired the XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR again with an X-Pro4 in mind. As a long-time user of the X-Pro1, 2, and 3, I am excited to see what Fujifilm may have cooked up with a successor.

Final Thoughts

The goal of this post was mainly to share sample images from the X-Pro2 and X-Pro1, since I did most of my initial review with the X-Pro3.

I believe these older sensors are overlooked and still provide excellent image quality, even though they are 10 and 14 years old.

I am glad I have the XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR again. It has injected some new life into my old Fuji cameras.
